Caring For Your Pet Naturally and Holistically
Apr 8 2011
I want to be an equine vet, and I was hoping to major in something like equine science for undergrad then go to an accredited veterinary college to become an equine vet.
so….what are some equine majors that would be good as a pre-vet course and what good schools have these?
also for graduate school as a vet…..i know there are only twenty-something of these and which of them would have a good program to help me become and equine vet?
thanks!

Now, I have no experience with this whatsoever because I’m still in high school, so don’t take every one of my words; I’ve only lightly researched this topic.
I’d say major in pre-vet medicine or animal science. Vet schools are VERY competitive, and they like to see that you’re well-rounded. Even if you know you want to only work with equines, get some experience with other animals: volunteer at a small animal shelter, work under a vet that works with all types of farm animals (goats, sheep, cows, pigs, all of those wonderful beings!). And of course, you’ll want experience with horses!
Tuft’s and Cornell are very highly respected here in the northeast, and everywhere around the country. They are, however, very expensive. If you can get a good scholarship or are willing to take out a few loans, then I would say definitely look into those two. They’re my top choice.
You can also browse each school’s websites. The link is on this page (there is also a list of every school)

You can also browse http://www.aavmc.org for more info about becoming a vet and different school’s requirements to get in.
Good luck!!
