Boxers come from a line of dogs bred throughout Europe since the 16th century. This breed of dogs, however, reached its greatest acclaim in Germany over the past 100 years. The Boxer can claim to be cousin to almost all of the recognized Bulldog breeds, from which it gets its fawn coloring. He can also claim to be a descendant of the old Tibetan fighting dogs, the Tibetan Mastiff. As well, the Boxer can profess to have genetic ties to the English Bulldog, and also some from Terrier line.

The name Boxer derived from the way this animal was known to fight in his early dog fighting days. These dogs used their front paws, basically pawing at their opponent when fighting, just as a man would in the boxing arena.

Up until the middle of the 19th century, Boxers were typically used as fighting dogs and bull baiting. After that, those activities were outlawed by most of the civilized world, but the Boxer breed lived on. Today Boxers have become one of the favorites in the dog world. They have maintained their in-bred traits of courageousness, aggressiveness, and the ability of defense when needed.

This breed of dog is a medium-sized animal that has a sturdy, compact, square-ish build. They are usually fawn in color, with varying shades from light tan to dark mahogany. They can also be a brindle color with clearly defined black striping on a fawn-colored background. Their coat is short and smooth, and generally appears tight-fitting. This dog usually has a docked tail.

Boxers are a well-developed, muscular appearing dog. They are full of energy and have a combination of speed, strength, and dexterity. They love to jump and run, and display superior jumping ability. They are very intelligent dogs that learn quickly and are able to take commands and discipline well. This breed of dog is often used, and well-suited for, military or police work.

The Boxer’s temperament presents as a dignified dog, both alert and self-assured. They are generally high-spirited and playful. The Boxer will generally exhibit curiosity with strangers, but he can show fearless courage and stubbornness if threatened. They are extremely good watch-dogs. In the family environment however, and with trusted friends, the Boxer’s temperament is known to be playful and patient. These dogs can be especially good with children. This breed of dog is an elegant animal that gives loyal affection to his masters. With all of these admirable traits, this type of dog makes a highly desirable companion and family pet.
